The Kalevala Institute operates in the directorship of the Professor of Folkloristics at the University of Turku, in agreement with the Institute’s Steering Group, which comprises of representatives from the five parties of the Cooperation Agreement, as well as professors and researchers from many Finnish universities. The present composition of the Steering Group, nominated by Rector Keijo Virtanen, University of Turku, on June 21, 2007, is as follows:

The Steering Group elected Professor Annikki Kaivola-Bregenhöj Chairman and Director Lauri Harvilahti Vice-Chairman of the Kalevala Institute. The mandate of the present composition of the Steering Group ends on July 31, 2010.
